The Church of The Holy Innocents, NYC

Constantino Brumidi
“Crucifixion”
Oil on Plaster
1870’s
40′ x 20′ Mural

Constatino Brumidi, celebrated 19th Century artist, is best known for his vast works in the United States Capitol Building in Washington D.C.  He was hired to create this monumental mural of the Crucifixion over the altar of the Church of the Holy Innocents in New York City.  His work was obscured by multiple layers of overpaint from previous restorations. Meticulous removal of the overpaint and all other unoriginal materials, including veiling grime and discolored varnish layers, revealed the true beauty and vibrancy of Brumidi’s artwork.
